back on the (hobby) horse

what up nerds! it's been a while.

i know. things have gotten pretty lame in this corner of the interweb. i could make excuses: med school. new city. med school. long distance relationship. med school. dog park. med school.

the thing is, THERE IS NO TIME FOR EXCUSES. tomorrow is Hobby Day, which means Show and Tell.

really? really. this is a crucial part of my professional education.

anyway. i have no hobbies! but i can't come up empty handed, so i'm going rogue, baking a pie, and resuscitating this piece. you called it, my hobby is food. some in the helping professions might say it is borderline manic to begin baking a pie at 11 o'clock on a weeknight. others might say: impossible (thanks mom!).

well, i say to them: bitches, it is on.

Recipe: Procrastination Pie

Filling
3 cups fresh blueberries
3 tbsp corn starch
1/2 cup sugar
2 tbsp lemon juice

Crust
2 1/2 cups flour
2 sticks butter
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp sugar
2/3 cup ice cold water

bake at 425 for 20 min, then 375 until it becomes delicious (30-45 min more).

i'm not going to hold your hand here, this pie is like med school: sink or swim. but i will give you some tips:

1. cheat.
before i matriculated, i insisted on spending hours cutting up each stick of butter into tiny pea-sized bits by hand. now i cuisinart!

horror:

2. keep it clean.
messes take time. spreading flour all over your counter top takes time. spilling it on the floor takes time. laughing and taking pictures while your dog licks it up take time. instead, use saran wrap!

layer it on both sides of your dough and roll away.

3. alcohol.

who needs a rolling pin when you have screw top wine: classier than box wine--and handy! drink while your pie bakes.

et viola:

NB: these rules are for pastry only. do not attempt to apply them to medical school. your pie will be perfect; your ass will get burned.

  2. What up bitches !!! Pie looks great. Save me a slice. Nice to see you moved into the modern age of baking -- using a cuisinart to cut the butter. Hint: Next time put the butter and flour into the machine together and get the pea-sized pieces already mixed with flour; I do. Makes a great crust.
